[English] The present investigation studied the relationship between differentiation of self and anxiety in a Dominican sample composed of 109 participants: 89 women and 20 men with an average age of 20.7 years. The Differentiation of Self Inventory (DSI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used for the assessment. The results reflect a significant relationship between the degree of differentiation and the level of trait anxiety and state anxiety (r = -.73; p < .001) (r = - .61; p < .001) respectively. In addition to this, we found that higher levels of I-Position were associated with lower anxiety (r = -.55; p < .001). Similarly, elevated scores on emotional reactivity (r = -.58; p < .001) (r = -.41; p < .001), fusion with others (r = -.42; p < .001) (r = -.27; p < .001) and emotional cutoff (r = -.41; p < .001) (r = -.36; p < .001) are related to decreased anxious symptomatology. Based on these results, we conclude that a person's individuation process is related to the way he or she bonds interpersonally and in his or her intrinsic psychological functioning. Therefore, taking into account the dimensions of differentiation of self, an individual who has an adequate adherence to his or her own beliefs will be less likely to react to external triggers, optimally managing possible conflicts with others.
