[English] Despite its recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, bachata still lacks formal institutional spaces dedicated to the performance, research, and dissemination of the genre. Faced with the social stigmas that have historically relegated bachata to the margins and still persist in todays’ society, La Ruta del Amargue (The Biterness Route) proposes a temporary, traveling museum exhibition accompanied by an active cultural program that seeks to destigmatize bachata within the Dominican institutional and social sphere. Using a qualitative methodology and compiling bibliographic sources, such as books and academic texts, the history of bachata was analyzed from its beginnings as marginalized music in the 1960s to its internationalization and global recognition starting in the 2000s. Based on the information gathered, interviews were conducted with musicians, cultural managers, and museum professionals to cover other aspects of bachata’s history and consolidate a museological script as the final proposal. La Ruta del Amargue seeks to reconstruct the spaces and atmospheres where bachata was born and evolved, using objects, replicas, sound, light, aroma, tactile reliefs, and accessible resources that allow the genre’s history to be narrated as a living archive. The cultural program complements the exhibition with nine themed weeks that include educational concerts, talks, screenings, jam sessions between musicians, and intergenerational activities. These initiatives transform the exhibition space into a meeting place for musicians, specialists, young people, migrant communities, and local audiences. As a traveling model, La Ruta del Amargue is committed to cultural decentralization, bringing museum experiences and activities such as concerts, talks, and guided tours to different cultural centers throughout the country, thus making it a space for lived experience, rather than just a static exhibition. It recognizes that bachata is a living heritage that must be preserved, discussed, and celebrated in accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive spaces.
