Efficacy of Curcuma Longa (Zingiberaceae) Against Parvimonas Micra. in Vitro Study
(2025) Ana María Carpio; Fabio Camacho-Alonso; Massimo Corigliano. IADR - International Association for Dental Research
Objectives: To determine the antibacterial efficacy of Curcuma extracts at different concentrations with an in vitro periodontal strain: Parvimonas micra. Methods: An exploratory, analytical, and longitudinal experimental study was designed. Different types of extracts (ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous) were prepared from Curcuma from India and Curcuma grown in the Dominican Republic. Curcuma solutions were prepared at different concentrations (100, 50, 25, 12.50, 6.25, 3.125, 1.562, 0.780, 0.390, 0.195 mg/ml) from each one. To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of Curcuma, modified disk diffusion method was performed. The effectiveness of Curcuma extracts was determined by measuring the efficacy of halo in mm. Results: It was observed that Curcuma extracts had efficacy against Parvimonas micra at a minimum concentration of 50 mg/ml in the (ethanolic and methanolic) and at 100 mg/ml in the (aqueous), with an average efficacy halo of 7mm. Conclusions: Extracts from Curcuma from India and Dominican Republic have antibacterial efficacy against Parvimonas micra at a minimum concentration of 50mg/ml. The efficacy average of both Dominican and Indian Curcuma were equal (p value=1,00>0,05) showing efficacy within the three extracts. This understudied periodontopathogen has been recently associated as a keynote in the dysbiotic pathway of periodontal disease and colon cancer and further studies are recommended.
