Utilización de opciones ecoamigables en las clínicas odontológicas para la reducción del impacto ambiental de los materiales desechables

Abstract

[Español] El trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la utilización de opciones ecoamigables en la clínica odontológica para la reducción del impacto ambiental de los materiales desechables convencionales. A través de encuestas, los artículos exponen la falta de conocimiento que presentan los estudiantes y profesionales de odontología, sobre la odontología ecoamigable y los desechos que producen. Existen alternativas sencillas para crear una consulta verde, una forma fácil de implementarlo son las cuatro Rs, reciclar, reducir el consumo de desechables, reusar materiales esterilizables en vez de materiales de uso único y por último, repensar cambios pequeños que a largo plazo causan un impacto ambiental. En la República Dominicana los desechos infecciosos se le realiza un tratamiento para ser llevados a los rellenos sanitarios, este tratamiento puede ser o no la incineración. Ambos tienen puntos a favor y en contra por su efecto negativo en el ambiente. Las alternativas ecoamigables no presentaron contradicciones, estas se repetían entre los distintos autores. Se compara que los rellenos sanitarios contribuyen más a la toxicidad humana, mientras que la incineración contribuye más al calentamiento global. Ambos causan emisiones de dióxido de carbono, los rellenos sanitarios por la combustión de metano y la incineración por la combustión de plásticos. Como conclusión se sugiere implementar alternativas sostenibles que promuevan una odontología ecológica, garantizando la seguridad del operador, del paciente y sin generar daños al medio ambiente. Un modo para incidir, en una odontología ecoamigable, es la base de las cuatro Rs, como formas de disminuir la contaminación ambiental.

[English] The aim of this work is to analyze the use of eco-friendly options in the dental clinic to reduce the environmental impact of the conventional disposable materials. Through surveys, the articles expose the lack of knowledge of students and dental professionals about eco-friendly dentistry and the waste that is produced. There are simple alternatives to create a green dental practice, an easy way to implement it are the four Rs, recycling, reducing consumption of disposables, reuse by using sterilizable materials instead of single use items, and rethinking small changes that in the long term cause a positive impact in the environment. In the Dominican Republic, infectious waste is processed through a treatment before being carried out to be taken to sanitary landfills, this waste treatment may or may not be incinerated. Both, sanitary landfill and incineration, have pros and cons, mainly their negative effect on the environment. The eco-friendly alternatives presented no contradictions, these were repeated among the different authors. It is compared that sanitary landfills contribute to human toxicity, while incineration contributes more to global warming. Both cause carbon emissions, landfills from the combustion of methane, and incineration by the combustion of plastics. In conclusion is sustainable alternatives that an ecological dentistry, guarantees the safety of the operator, patient of the and without causing damage to the environment. One way to influence, in an eco-friendly dentistry, is the basis of the four Rs, as ways to reduce environmental pollution.
