Manejo odontológico y conductual en pacientes pediátricos : una revisión literaria

Abstract

[Español] La investigación presente aborda un tema de gran relevancia para los odontólogos pediátricos, enfocados en la necesidad de proporcionar un servicio de alta calidad que garantice respeto y comodidad. Uno de los principales obstáculos en los tratamientos odontológicos es la falta de asistencia a las citas, mayormente atribuida al miedo asociado a la visita al odontólogo. Se identificaron diversos factores, tanto internos como externos, que desencadenan esta problemática, incluyendo experiencias previas negativas, la duración del procedimiento, historial de hospitalización, ansiedad parental y el temperamento del niño. En consecuencia, se realizó una revisión literaria para describir el manejo odontológico y conductual en pacientes pediátricos. Esta revisión se llevó a cabo durante enero y febrero de 2024 utilizando buscadores de salud como PubMed, EBSCO, Redalyc, PMC, Conchrane y CRAI. Como resultado, se concluyó que la efectividad comparativa de diferentes estrategias de manejo odontológico y conductual en pacientes odontopediátricos está influenciada por su extensa investigación a lo largo de los años, generando debates sobre cuál es la más eficaz o menos invasiva para los niños. Entre las estrategias más utilizadas y efectivas se destacan las técnicas no farmacológicas, especialmente apropiadas a la edad cognitiva de los pacientes.

[English] The present research addresses a topic of interest to pediatric dentists, as it is necessary to provide excellent service of quality, respect, and comfort. One of the reasons why dental treatments fail is the non-attendance to appointments, which is mostly caused by the fear that can be generated by visiting the dentist. Several factors, both external and internal, are considered triggers for these manifestations. Among these factors are negative past experiences, the duration of the procedure, a history of hospitalization, parental anxiety, and the child's temperament. For the latter reason, it was sought to describe dental and behavioral management in pediatric patients through a literature review. A search of scientific literature was carried out in the period from January to February of the year 2024. This search was conducted based on health search engines such as PubMed, EBSCO, Redalyc, PMC, Cochrane, and CRAI. To conclude that nowadays the comparative effectiveness of different dental and behavioral management strategies in pediatric patients, influenced by their extensive study over the years, exists, there are debates about which is the most effective or least invasive for infants. Among the most used and effective are non-pharmacological techniques, also highlighted because the cognitive age of the patients requires it.
